SPUR Swimming

CODE OF CONDUCT

1.                 Any swimmer who is known to use alcohol, drugs, is subject to suspension from the team.

2.                 Never interfere with the progress of another swimmer, during practice or otherwise.  If a swimmer behind you in the lane taps you on your leg/foot, allow that swimmer to pass you.

3.                 At all club functions, whether practice, meets, or social gatherings, we expect each swimmer to behave in such a way that their actions reflect positively on the team.

4.                 All members of the club, whether parents or swimmers, continue to protect and improve the excellent reputation of this club.

5.                 When appropriate, swimmers are expected to assist in the setup and breakdown of the pool before or after practice.  This is an important part of team building.

DISMISSAL POLICY

  1. The “3 Strikes and You’re Out” System

After a swimmer has been warned three times concerning inappropriate behavior, that swimmer will be asked to leave the practice.  After multiple such warnings, a swimmer may be expelled from the SPUR Swim Club.  This plan will be formalized, with a copy placed (1) in each family file, (2) in the online team (website) handbook, and (3) in each registration packet.

  1. Criteria for “3 Strikes and You’re Out”.

Strike 1: The swimmer will be asked to stop the inappropriate behavior.

Strike 2: The swimmer is asked again and reminded that the situation is getting very serious.

Strike 3: After not complying with warnings 1 and 2, the swimmer is dismissed from practice.

The situation outlined above would always be followed by:

·          A meeting of involved swimmer and coach at the end of practice.

·          A dismissal slip, including swimmer and coach’s name, date, reason for dismissal, swimmer’s explanation, and whether it was the 1, 2, or 3 time.

·          A copy of slip to be put in family file, and one copy to be put in Head Coach’s file.

·          A phone call to the parents each time.

  1. Reporting of dismissals.

The following actions will follow each incident of dismissal from practice:

1st dismissal     A phone call to the swimmer’s parent as a notification of dismissal, and meeting request if desired by coach or swimmer.

2nd dismissal     A phone call with parent(s) to schedule mandatory meeting with the coach.

3rd dismissal     A phone call with parent(s) to schedule mandatory meeting during which expulsion from team is discussed as a final remedy to the recurring problem.  At this stage, the swimmer and parent(s) must provide sufficient cause to allow the swimmer to remain on the team.

  1. Team expectations for the Appropriate Degree of Participation during Practices.

The following criteria outline the expectations of a club swimmer while attending practice.  The word practice includes swim workouts as well as all other practice related activities such as “dry land” drills:

.

·          On occasions when a swimmer feels less than 100%, they are still welcome to participate in practices if it can be done to their benefit without adversely affecting other swimmers.  By attending a practice a swimmer indicates desire to participate in a constructive and beneficial manner. To this end, the swimmer is expected to participate at a level that is considered beneficial by the coach.  If a swimmer finds that he or she is unable or unwilling to continue for physical or emotional reasons they are expected to discuss this situation with the coach prior to practice.

·          At the coach’s discretion the swimmer may be asked to participate in “lighter” practice sets to accommodate fatigue, illness or injury.

·          Before, during and after practice swimmers are expected to act in a non-disruptive manner.  Examples of disruptive behavior include talking while the coach is talking, repeatedly starting sets late or stopping sets early, and engaging in physical contact with other swimmers in a deliberate effort to annoy them or interrupt their workout.

·          During the entire period of practice, swimmers are expected to act in a safe manner.  Examples of unsafe behavior include running on deck, throwing kick boards, or engaging in excessive horseplay.
